I learned Spanish the same way you are about to.

I grew up in Killay and went to school in Swansea, where Spanish was a subject I was fairly ordinary at for quite a while. What changed it was going far enough into it that it stopped being a set of rules and started being a way of talking to people.

I read Spanish at Cardiff University and graduated with a 2:1. Part of that degree was a year abroad, which I spent living in Valencia and studying at the Universitat de València, in Spanish, alongside Spanish students. That year did more for my fluency than the three around it combined, and it is the reason I teach the way I do.

Why not being a native speaker helps

It sounds like a weakness in an advert, so I would rather address it directly. A native speaker has never had to work out why the subjunctive is difficult, because for them it never was. They know the right answer without having a route to it.

I built that route myself, fairly recently, starting from a Welsh classroom. I know which explanations actually land, which shortcuts cause problems later, and what the papers your school is preparing you for genuinely ask for, because I sat them.

How I teach

Speaking early and imperfectly, corrections gathered up and dealt with at the end rather than mid-sentence, and grammar introduced when it answers a question you have already run into. Homework short, specific and marked.
